Goals battle on Friday night

Mt. Carmel, IL — The Lady Statesmen were back in Mt. Carmel to face Southwest Tennessee Community College on a Friday the 13th special. The rain was pouring, and the goals were raining in as well. Two minutes into the match, Southwest Tennessee took the lead after a defensive error by the Lady Statesmen led to an open net opportunity. Despite the early deficit, the Lady Statesmen kept their composure and began to find their way in the match. In the 7th minute, sophomore captain, Guadalupe Amicone dribbled past three defenders and took a shot outside the 18-yard box, which the goalkeeper was unable to handle, resulting in the first goal of the match for the Lady Statesmen. Five minutes later, a hand ball in the box was conceded by Southwest Tennessee, which led to a penalty kick being awarded to the Lady Statesmen. Once again, sophomore captain, Guadalupe Amicone stepped up to the penalty spot and put the shot into the net to take a 2-1 lead for the Lady Statesmen. Southwest Tennessee responded by putting the Lady Statesmen under plenty of pressure during the remainder of the first half, but some wonderful saves by sophomore goalkeeper, Eimy Gallegos, was able to keep the match at 2-1 going into the half time.

The Lady Statesmen began the second half with the same effort and tenacity, constantly on the attack early on the second half. In the 57th minute, Eduarda Queiroz was able to dribble past two defenders by the touchline and find a pass to Guadalupe Amicone, who once again was able to find the back of the net, to complete her hattrick for the night. The match was still far from over, as Southwest Tennessee continued to apply pressure and tried to fight their way back into the match. Some more fantastic goalkeeping in the second half by Eimy Gallegos was able to limit the Southwest Tennessee comeback efforts. With 3 minutes left in the second half, Southwest Tennessee were able to find their second goal of the match, but their comeback efforts were a little too late in the game. The Lady Statesmen shout out all other efforts by the opponent to equalize the match and were able to take the win.

The Lady Statesmen are now 6-6-1 on the season and will travel on the road to face Jefferson College on October 15, 2023.
